How much stretch wrap do I need to wrap a pallet?

Wrapping a pallet can be tricky, but with the right tools and information, any project will succeed. Knowing how much stretch wrap to use is an essential part of the process, and understanding when and where it should come into play can greatly benefit your wrapping needs. In this blog post, we’ll cover the basics of what materials you need to ensure a secure load on your pallet and tips and tricks for ensuring you have enough stretch wrap for each job & How to Use Stretch Wrap. Ready to up your pallet wrap game?

What is a pallet, and why wrap it in a stretch wrap?

Pallets are used for storing and shipping goods. They provide a secure foundation for products, ensuring they remain safe and organized during transit. They also make moving and handling products in warehouses, loading docks, and other storage areas easier. Because of their structure and size, pallets require extra protection while being stored or shipped. Stretch wrap is the ideal solution for providing this additional layer of security as it provides an airtight seal around the product on the pallet that won’t slip off or become loose over time, as tape might do. It also provides a cushion to absorb shock due to rough handling while in transit, keeping your cargo safer than ever before.

Types of stretch wrap available for optimal protection against weather, wear and tear

  1. Polyethylene stretch wrap: This type of stretch wrap is the most popular and widely used because it provides very good protection against dust, dirt, and moisture, as well as significant levels of wear and tear. Polyethene stretch wrap can also be printed with a company logo or product identification for easy identification and branding.
  2. Blown film stretch wrap: Typically made from recycled plastic materials, blown film stretch wraps provide excellent water resistance while still allowing air to flow through. Plus, they are extremely durable and provide superior protection against punctures, tears and other types of damage due to their expansion characteristics when applied to items/packages that need secure wrapping.
  3. VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) stretch wrap: VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) stretch wraps are designed to protect metal products from corrosion and rust. They can also be used for wrapping items that may not necessarily need protection from the elements but must remain free from dust, dirt or moisture. They release a harmless gas that forms an invisible barrier around the item when applied, protecting it from any external damage.
  4. UV-resistant stretch wrap: This type of stretch wrap provides superior protection against UV rays and other environmental conditions that can cause potential damage over time. It’s typically used for applications where long-term storage or outdoor use is necessary, such as boats, recreational vehicles, or even items that need to be stored outside.

How much stretch wrap do you need based on pallet size and height?

The most important considerations regarding stretch wrapping pallets are pallet size and height, as they largely determine how much stretch wrap you need. To save time and money, here is a simple guide that can help you calculate how much stretch wrap you need for each type of pallet:

For standard pallets with a length of 48 inches or 1.22 meters, a width of 40 inches or 1.02 meters, and a height of 45 inches or 1.14 meters – you will need approximately 500 feet (152 meters) of 20-inch (50 cm) wide film to wrap these types of pallets securely.

Smaller-sized pallets, such as those with lengths of 40 inches (1.02 meters), widths of 36 inches (91 cm), and heights of 48 inches (1.22 meters), typically require about 400 feet (122 meters) of 18-inch (45 cm) wide film for secure wrapping.

Larger pallets that measure in at a length of 60 inches (1.52 meters), a width of 48 inches (1.22 meters), and a height of 54 inches or 1.37 meters will need approximately 600 feet (183 meters) of 24-inch (60 cm) wide film to be properly wrapped.

And, if you’re looking to wrap an extra tall pallet with dimensions measuring in at a length of 48 inches or 1.22 meters, a width of 40 inches or 1.02 meters, and a height of 63 inches or 1.6 meters – you’ll need approximately 600 feet (183 meters) of 30-inch (76 cm) wide film.

Factors to consider when determining the amount of stretch wrap needed

  1. The size of the load – Large and bulky items will require more stretch wrap than smaller items.
  2. Weight of the load – Heavier loads may require more stretch wrap to hold them in place securely.
  3. Shape of the load – Irregularly shaped or oddly sized objects may need additional wrapping to keep them secure during transportation.
  4. Tightness of the wrap – The tighter a package is wrapped, the less material will be needed to keep it secure. A looser grip on the film can lead to tears and rips over time due to vibration and movement during transport.
  5. Type of stretch wrap used- Heavy-duty films are thicker and offer greater puncture resistance for heavier loads, while lighter-weight films are better suited for smaller items.
